Edefu. Ecological FurnacesTo reach the objectives, we will first investigate innovative heating technologies (WP3 – Development of new heating systems). The first one will be plasma, this technology gives a high energy rate, so that melting times are consequently reduced whereas productivity increases. This method also has a potential to improve the metallurgical quality and reduce the quantity of residues.

Another working field will be electrical resistances; this method will be used when the temperature control reaches the melting point of the material, resistance will be used to maintain the feedstock at the holding temperature. The last innovative system will be microwave as a promising use on glass can exhibit a fast and less energy intensive heating.

Another working line to reach the objective is to reduce the heat losses through the furnace walls. To carry out this work, effort will be made on investigating better insulating materials work package 4 (WP4 – Development of new refractory materials) aims to develop nano particles and nano fibers to reach reduced thermal properties for an improved insulating material. Moreover, these developments will allow increasing the energetic efficiency while reducing the lining wall width present in current furnaces with the consequence to produce smaller energy efficient systems.

Ecological FurnacesFurthermore, heat losses reduction will be achieved through emissions recovery, work package 5 (WP5 – Furnace energy optimization, recovery systems and maintenance) aims at reducing smoke and CO2 emissions. To reach this objective, an innovative process will be developed including: Heat recovery with new materials (PCM: Phase Change Material) to convert exhaust heat and recovered energy in re-usable sources (electric, air conditioning, heating…). Waste recovery: particle and normal residues collecting using focused heating sources, as for example using laser or plasma to break the chemical bonds. This innovation will optimise raw material use and increase the productivity.

The developed technologies will be integrated in work package (WP6 – Furnace design integrating with new technologies) with feedback data from the industrial validation (WP8 - Furnace validations), and will target three main output: Firstly, the development of new software tools to include theoretical and real values obtained in the data gathering (WP2 - Industrial specifications and requirements) and to determine the best technologies for each analyzed case with respect to current technologies by algorithmic calculation on consumptions, heating capacities and other variables. Secondly, to set up a real furnace simulation model for aluminium and glass, by modifying the theoretical model according to the gathered data on the validation from the real values from the prototypes. Thirdly, the theoretical validation on ceramic and cement furnaces comparing with the expertise of the end users from the consortium.

Work package (WP7 – Large scale demonstrator: aluminium and glass furnaces) properly consists of the prototype furnace building for aluminium at real scale and for glass at small scale. Validation (WP8 – Furnace validations) of these furnaces will be carried out on real industries INDALCASTING and VIDRALA but with contribution of all partners and all the important parameters will be measured.

Edefu. Ecological FurnacesThere is a sub-project transversal and serves to validate the process energetic and emissions measurements, quality control and health issues. The previous task (WP9 - Dissemination and exploitation) has been distributed throughout all the project. This is realised by the energy measurement, quantification, simulation and calculations, so that it is possible to be evaluating throughout each step to obtain the theoretical values to be able to apply them to the methodology of other furnaces.

Also, dissemination results (WP9 – Dissemination and exploitation) will be carried out supporting with organizations as for example CAEF, FEAF, VDG,…. and it will be responsibility of all partners.

To conclude, It must be highlighted that EDEFU is a real bet technology, of a consortium which believes the possibility of improving the current processes, according to the test to be performed on the industries in the future to obtain a better use of the energy, to increase the productivity and to be environmental friendly. This technological betting, also aims to create a knowledge base among industries, research centres and universities to drive Europe in a reference and leadership position on the energetic efficiency at international level.
